MahlerFest

Board & Staff

At the heart of MahlerFest is a devoted circle of visionaries, stewards, and makers—our board and staff—whose shared passion keeps the music alive and evolving. With deep roots in the arts and a love for Mahler’s legacy, they shape each season with care and conviction, balancing tradition with fresh imagination. Their behind-the-scenes efforts form the quiet pulse that allows the festival’s bold spirit to thrive.

Ken: Artistic Director

Hailed by Gramophone as a “symphonic conductor of stature,” Kenneth Woods is a conductor, cellist, composer, author, and former rock guitarist whose career spans leading orchestras such as the National Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, and BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Since 2013, he has served as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the English Symphony Orchestra (ESO), and also leads the Elgar Festival in the composer’s hometown.

A lifelong devotee of Mahler’s music, Woods has conducted acclaimed performances of the symphonies and song cycles across Europe and the Americas. His 2011 debut Mahler recording with Somm Records earned an IRR Outstanding rosette, and he is a frequent speaker and writer on Mahler, having contributed to BBC programs and served as blogger for the Mahler in Manchester series.

Under his leadership, the ESO has gained a reputation for adventurous programming, winning awards for premieres of works by Donald Fraser and John Joubert. His recordings with ESO—including projects featuring Ernst Krenek, Elgar, and 21st-century violin concertos—have earned critical praise, including The Times’ Best Recordings and Classic FM’s Disc of the Month.

In 2016, Woods and ESO launched the 21st Century Symphony Project, commissioning nine new symphonies from leading composers. He’s also led high-profile performances of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, Elgar with Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and Brahms arranged for full orchestra. His blog, A View from the Podium, is among the most popular classical music blogs globally.

Ethan: Executive Director

Since completing his Masters of Music at CU-Boulder in 2002, Ethan Hecht has cultivated careers as both a performing musician and nonprofit administrator. As a performing musician, Mr. Hecht is currently the principal violist of the Fort Collins Symphony with whom he appeared as a soloist in 2014. He has held positions with the Boulder and Greeley Philharmonic Orchestras, the Greater Lansing Symphony, and Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra, was the principal violist of the Battle Creek Symphony for two seasons and the Colorado MahlerFest for four years, and has performed with the Honolulu Symphony and almost every professional orchestra along the Front Range.

Mr. Hecht has also worked “behind the curtain” with many nonprofit organizations. He is currently the orchestra librarian for the Fort Collins Symphony and was formerly the Executive Director of the Boulder Chorale. Previously, Mr. Hecht spent 14 years with the Colorado Music Festival and Center for Musical Arts where he began as Orchestra Personnel Manager and finished as the Director of the organization’s community music school in Lafayette. He has also served as the Orchestra Manager of the Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra and has consulted with several Boulder County nonprofit organizations. As a volunteer, Mr. Hecht was chair of the Lafayette Public Library Advisory Board for two years and served on the board a total of six years.

Mr. Hecht lives in Lafayette with his wife, a social worker and yoga teacher, and their  daughter who is a musical theater actress (Annie and Christmas Story at BDT Stage, Oliver at Candlelight Dinner Playhouse, and Into the Woods at CenterStage Theatre Company). Together they enjoy making and listening to music, cooking, hiking, skiing, and camping.
