Passion. Transgression. Confession. Acceptance. Transfiguration.
Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night tells the story of two young people in love confronting a secret. It is music of intense passion, drama and radiant beauty, one of the most Romantic works ever written.

Arnold Schoenberg’s first major work, the string sextet Verklärte Nacht, is based on a poem by Richard Dehmel that describes a man and woman out walking on a cold night.  The premiere on March 18, 1902 was met with some unfavorable reaction, perhaps attributable to anti-semitism. However, Schoenberg’s work impressed Mahler, who was in the audience that night.

Hear it live at 7 PM on May 17 at Roots Music Project, then stick around for a late night concert of Mahler and Hendrix. We’ll also have virtuoso violin stylings from concertmaster Alan Snow and dazzling viola duos from the exciting Talla Rouge Duo.

What to Expect

Roots Music Project is a new-to-us venue, so we are still figuring things out ourseleves. This cool, nonprofit venue calls itself a “music incubator,” so we thought it was the perfect place to try an experiment like a double-header concert. The venue is in a warehouse-type building but they have done a great job setting it up like a club-style concert space. Most of the seats are folding chairs but there will be some high tables around the edge and two seating ‘pods’ with couches and arm chairs at the back. There is a cash bar. There is also a parking lot but be prepared to park out on the street if we get a good crowd. This is a party as much as a concert. Dress comfortably. We’ll keep the music going as long as folks are having a good time!

The first concert, a traditional chamber music concert, will begin at 7 PM and will last approximately 90 minutes without intermission. We will take a break of about 30 minutes while we reset the stage. We expect to have some pizza or another late-night snack food available for purchase, more details to be announced soon. At 9 PM, the second show will begin, Electric Liederland: Hendrix Meets Mahler!
