In a collection of writings assembled by his friends and representing the closest thing we have to an autobiography, Jimi Hendrix listed Mahler as one of his influences and referenced having many Mahler recordings. He wrote about segregation and being persecuted, themes familiar to Mahler himself. He also wrote about wanting to pioneer a new sound. He told singer-songwriter Patti Smith he wanted to create a music unlike anything he’d written, or anyone had heard before.

With Hendrix’s affection for, and similarites to Mahler, and with our own artistic director possessing unique skill on the guitar, this concert feels like a natural fit. Come and hear what Hendrix might have sounded like if he ever played Mahler’s music. And experience the genius of Kenneth Woods in a way you have never seen it before.

What to Expect

Roots Music Project is a new-to-us venue, so we are still figuring things out ourselves. This cool, nonprofit venue calls itself a “music incubator,” so we thought it was the perfect place to try an experiment like a double-header concert. The venue is in a warehouse-type building but they have done a great job setting it up like a club-style concert space. Most of the seats are folding chairs but there will be some high tables around the edge and two seating ‘pods’ with couches and arm chairs at the back. There is a cash bar. There is also a parking lot but be prepared to park out on the street if we get a good crowd. This is a party as much as a concert. Dress comfortably. We’ll keep the music going as long as folks are having a good time!

The first concert, a traditional chamber music concert, will begin at 7 PM and will last approximately 90 minutes without intermission. We will take a break of about 30 minutes while we reset the stage. We expect to have some pizza or another late-night snack food available for purchase, more details to be announced soon. At 9 PM, the second show will begin, Electric Liederland: Hendrix Meets Mahler!
