MahlerFest XXXVI – Rise Again

May 17-21, 2023

On the final pages of his epic Second Symphony, the choir triumphantly sing “Rise again! You shall rise again!”

MahlerFest XXXVI celebrates humanity’s capacity for resilience and renewal in a festival week that culminates with Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 2 and Thea Musgrave’s Phoenix Rising. Festival audiences will embark on a journey beginning on May 17, with our performance of Act I of Wagner’s Die Walküre, a work that Mahler idolized and that encapsulates a hero’s embrace of a doomed love. We will transport ourselves back in time at our Liederabend (Evening of Song), a unique re-creation of a 1905 concert of Mahler’s orchestral songs that he conducted in Vienna. Our symposium will showcase brilliant scholars, providing context and counterpoint that will add richness to your experience of the week’s diverse musical offerings. Mahler’s profound influence on the next generation is celebrated with performances of the String Sextet by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, who Mahler mentored as a child prodigy, and the U.S. premiere of the Fourth Symphony of Hans Gál, who as a young music student would watch Mahler’s weekly rehearsals at the Vienna Opera and who would later teach Thea Musgrave.
