Dr. Renate Stark-Voit

Dr. Renate Stark-Voit was born and raised in Munich, Germany. She studied musicology and German and Italian Literature in Munich, Graz, and Vienna (Austria) earning PhD in 1988 (under the name of Hilmar-Voit) at the University of Vienna. Stark-Voit’s dissertation about Gustav Mahler was printed with the title “Im Wunderhorn-Ton” (In the Wunderhorn Tone) (Tutzing 1988).

Stark-Voit went on to research Schubert, Schumann, Webern, and Mahler, writing articles and papers. She was a freelance lecturer for Universal Edition, Vienna where she cooperated with musicians such as Thomas Hampson, Mariss Jansons, Teodor Currentzis, and others on various projects and publications. She was the Co-director and Editor of the New Critical Edition of Mahler: Des Knaben Wunderhorn for voice and piano as well as orchestra (Universal Edition, 1993-2011) and the Second Symphony (UE/Kaplan Foundation, Vienna/New York 2010, two volumes).

Stark-Voit is a member of the board of the International Gustav Mahler Society, Vienna. She recently completed a new edition of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony (UE, Vienna 2021; conducting and study scores UE, Vienna 2023). She is also the editor of the Nachrichten zur Mahler Forschung (News about Mahler Research).
