Description
Karen Poulson has lived in Colorado for about 60 years, painting and exhibiting here and througout the US. Her studies in anthropology led to an interest in prehistory and the marks and remnants left by previous generations, connecting past to present.
Artist Statement
I have always been interested in the mark making urge that we humans have shared, from early Stone Age man to present day grafitti artists. These images or marks can be clearer than words–an abstracted language. Painting has been, for me, a way to understand my inner and outer worlds. In the larger pieces shown I am striving for a resolution of opposites–they are a combination of impulse and decision, form and energy, mass and void, external vs. internal, death and regeneration. On the other hand, the “Land Forms” pieces are part of a continuum of work done in response to the western and southwestern landscape, having to do with the marks left by time and weather on our environment.
