Peter Franklin – Professor of Music

Peter Franklin retired as Professor of Music at the University of Oxford in 2014; he remains an Emeritus Fellow of St Catherine’s College there. He edited the English translation (by Dika Newlin) of Natalie Bauer-Lechner’s Recollections of Gustav Mahler (Faber 1980) and subsequent publications include Mahler. Symphony no.3 and The Life of Mahler (both with Cambridge University Press, in 1991 and 1997 respectively). More recent books by him that include material on Mahler are Seeing Through Music: Gender and Modernism in Classic Hollywood Film Scores (Oxford University Press, 2011) and Reclaiming Late-Romantic Music: Singing Devils and Distant Sounds (University of California Press, 2014). He has published many essays and articles on Mahler and recently contributed to the CUP collection Mahler in Context, edited by Charles Youmans, in 2021.
