David Korevaar and Jeremey Reger, with some help from Mahler himself, will play arrangements of Mahler’s music. You will also hear two movements of a Bruckner symphony arranged by Mahler. One of the arrangers, Zemlinsky, was featured on a MahlerFest chamber music program last year. A video of that performance, featuring Parry Karp and Jennifer Hayghe, is available here. Karp and Hayghe will play the cello sonata by another of these arrangers, Alfredo Casella, on this year’s Thursday afternooon chamber music concert.

Jeremy Reger

Korevaar’s performance of Liszt’s arrangement of Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony during MahlerFest XXXII (2019) convinced us of the value of hearing these familiar works in this unfamiliar context. In fact, it is fascinating! What the arranger chooses to highlight, or leave out, says a lot about their interpretation of the piece. Melodies that might be hard to trace as they bounce between orchestra sections and instruments affect the listener in a different way when played this way. Of course, Mahler gives us his own blessing with the piano rolls of the maestro playing his own Fourth Symphony.

What to Expect

Grusin Music Hall is in the Imig Music Building on the CU-Boulder Campus. It is a beautiful room that has recently been renovated. It has a wonderful piano and acoustics to match. This is “home turf” for Korevaar and Reger who both work at the university. There is parking immediately across the street but please pay attention to signage. There are also several bus routes that go past campus very close to the music building. This is our kickoff concert so you can expect a few opening comments at the start of the concert. As with all of our performances, there is no dress code. Come as you are!
