Jason Starr has become widely known for his movies about Mahler. Starr’s newest movies had not been released when MahlerFest performed the First Symphony in 2019, but now you can see the first showing of the movies outside of New York City! Unfortunately, due to the Delta variant surge, Starr will no longer travel to Boulder but he will do a live Q&A session after the showing. And because his movies are so popular, we will add showings as necessary to accommodate all who want to watch them.
MAHLER’S TITAN: The Romance, Death and Triumph of a Young Musician details the extraordinary circumstances around which Mahler wrote what many consider the greatest first symphony of any composer.
ON MAHLER’S SONGS OF A WAYFARER reveals the personal romantic turmoil that inspired the composer’s first masterpiece.
Musical examples in both films are performed by Estonian National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Neeme Järvi; Thomas Hampson sings the Wayfarer Songs. The two movies run a total of 97 minutes.
