Craig Butterfield is Professor of Double Bass and Jazz Studies at the University of South Carolina. American Record Guide has said “Craig Butterfield is nothing short of magnificent. I haven’t heard such expressive playing and virtuosic command since Gary Karr. His tone is gorgeous, his intonation rock-solid, and his phrasing expressive and flexible.” Soundboard magazine stated “Butterfield can make his instrument dance and sing with an effortlessness which is hard to credit. (He must have a bionic left forearm). Not only can he inhabit the range of a cello, but he can make it light and lyrical when needed.”
Butterfield has composed, performed, and recorded in genres as diverse as classical, jazz, American folk, and World music. Notable collaborations include touring and recording with jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, four albums of original music in the progressive blugrass band EZRA, three albums of original music with multi- instrumentalist Jesse Jones as the Jones/Butterfield duo, three albums with classical guitarist Matthew Slotkin as Dez Cordas, a collaboration with classical pianist Charles Fugo, and the South Carolina-based original music group Boomtown Trio. Butterfield’s YouTube channel featuring original performances in multiple genres has a third of a million views.
