Colorado MahlerFest IX

Announcing the Ninth Annual Colorado MahlerFest! to be held January 9-14, 1996

• a free song recital on the 9th at the Boulder Public Library,
• a free showing at the Library on the 11th of a Czech biographical film on Mahler, Sermon to the Fishes, Part I, the Wunderhorn Years (treating Mahler as a boy in Jihlava up to the time he went to the music conservatory in Vienna).
• Lectures on Saturday afternoon, January 13th, in Old Main, University of Colorado Campus and a repeat of the film, a Bernstein video on the 9th, Panel discussion of recordings,
• Saturday evening, January 13th, a concert performance of Mahler's 9th Symphony. The concert performance will be preceeded by lectures by G. Fox, President, New York Mahlerites.
• Sunday afternoon, January 14th, a concert performance of Mahler's 9th Symphony.

The MahlerFest concert of the glorious eighth symphony last January resulted in a fine all-digital recording, now available in a two-CD set. FANFARE and American Record Guide Nov-Dec issues contain detailed reviews. Suffice it to paraphrase FANFARE: "The three legendary live performances, Stokowski, Horenstein, Bernstein, are about to be joined by a fourth -- Robert Olson and the Colorado MahlerFest. This is one of the greatest perfomances I have ever heard. ... There are not many Mahler recordings I consider essential, this is one of them. Highest recommendation." Mahler experts have also praised the performance, Olson's reading, and the recording.
